The Engineering and Construction Section of the Parks, Recreation, and Historic Sites Division is responsible for the planning, design, and construction of new facilities and the maintenance and repair of existing facilities on sites administered by the Division and in providing assistance to other DNR Divisions and oversight on projects as needed.
The Engineering and Construction Section consists of administrative, design, and construction staff that operates out of the Atlanta office statewide and regionally from two field offices near Helen and Douglas.
Field maintenance crews are dispatched from four region shops: Blackburn near Dahlonega, Hard Labor Creek near Madison, Little Ocmulgee near McRae, and Georgia Veterans near Cordele. Field crews handle specialized work and emergency repairs that park staff would not routinely do.
Project planning is one of the most important aspects of the Section. This generally begins with a concept plan which is produced from a predetermined general development plan or an identified specific need. Site inspections are done to insure the protection of archeological sites and sensitive and protected plant and animal species. Additionally, planning includes coordination with other agencies, local authorities, architects and engineers, and others as necessary to insure safety and compliance with health and building codes.
Following all this and the funding of a project, detailed plans and specifications are made, and either field crew are sent out to perform the work or bidding processes are conducted to all for the work to be done by a contractor. In either case, inspections are routinely made by administrative staff before acceptance of the work and public use is allowed.
