You have the unique opportunity to visit one of the best
preserved Civil War battlefields in the nation. By visiting, students
will be able to appreciate how the common soldier lived. They will also
develop an understanding about the cost of the war on civilians, and learn
the realistic side of war not usually found in textbooks.
The programs are designed to enhance the teachings of the
American Civil War in the classroom. Since this is a popular destination
for school groups, we recommend a trip only for those who are studying
history.
Reservations can be made year round by calling the park
at (770) 443-7850. Please try to make your reservations at least two weeks
in advance of the date of your planned visit.
Planning Your Visit
Please look at the list of ranger-led programs. Choose those programs
which are appropriate for your students' ages and topics they are studying.
Programs are arranged on a "first come, first served basis,"
so have several possible dates available when you call.
Groups of 15-40: This is the most manageable size group
for us to handle.
Groups of 40-80: Due to restrictions on staffing, we
cannot always guarantee a program for a group of this size. Call and speak
with site staff. We try to accommodate groups of this size by dividing
the number of students and rotating them between programs.
Groups of 80 and more: It is not possible to do a quality
ranger-led program for so large a group. Your visit will have to be done
on a self-guided basis. Prior notice of your visit is required. This will
help staff to better schedule the areas to avoid conflicts due to space
limitations.
Facilities
The visitor center houses the video room, exhibit hall, and sales area
where books and souvenirs may be purchased. There are also two restrooms,
a water fountain, and a soft drink machine. The picnic area can accommodate
fifty people at once.
